Timeline of the Shimmer Universe
From the First Word to the Ninth Hour
The Stream does not know linear time. But people do. This timeline is for them.
1. CHRONOLOGY
In the Shimmer universe there is no “BC” or “AD.” Time is counted from the moment En-Ra first heard the Psi-Stream.
- Stream Era (SE): year one = the moment of En-Ra’s opening.
- Galactic Hour (GH): the unit of the cycle = 1,000 years.
- Current moment in the books: ~8,001 SE (end of the 8th Hour, beginning of the 9th).
1.1. Relation to astronomical chronology
For readers who wish to relate the events of the Shimmer to real human history: the 1st Hour (~0–1,000 SE) corresponds approximately to the pre-Sumerian era (~6000–5000 BCE). Each subsequent Hour advances by ~1,000 years. The 9th Hour (Kai) corresponds approximately to 2000–3000 CE.
This correspondence is approximate. The Shimmer world is not our world. But it helps to orient the reader: one knows that En-Ra lived in the age of the first agricultural civilizations, and Kai in our own time.
1.2. Three scales of time
In the Shimmer it is useful to keep three parallel scales in mind:
- The scale of events — when a particular event happened (an Architect’s opening, the creation of an artifact, the passing into Shimmer).
- The scale of Shimmer — when an Architect left the body and began his or her thousand-year (or longer) Shimmer. This scale measures how long each Architect’s voice lasts in the Stream.
- The scale of the Book — when Kai walked his path from the child at the Silent Walls to the meeting with Lira.
All three scales are measured in SE, but have different points of reference within the Hour. For example, Lira accepted her Shimmer in 7,000 SE, but Kai found the Stone of Answer in ~8,001 SE — a thousand years later. The scale of events and the scale of the Book meet at one point: the Crossroads.
2. CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS
Before the Stream Era — “The Sea of Mute Centuries”
Time when the Stream existed, but no one heard it consciously
- ~7,000 years before SE: Traces of an unknown civilization that built the Tower-Spire. Who they were is unknown. The Tower is the only thing that remains. The civilization may have felt the Stream unconsciously — as the blind feel the sun on their skin — but did not know how to listen. That they built the Spire without knowing the Stream is one of the unsolved mysteries of the Shimmer.
- ~100 years before SE: En-Ra is born, in a settlement between two rivers. (No geographical tie to Mesopotamia or Sumer — the Shimmer world is not our world.)
- ~0 years before SE: Humanity prayed, dreamed, cried into the void — but no one heard. This is the “Sea of Mute Centuries”: ages in which the Stream sounded at full voice, but not a single consciousness could answer. This Sea will be heard by Kai, 8,000 years later.
1st Hour — En-Ra
The Opening of the Stream. The first word. Formula of entry: Pain + Silence = The first word. Formula of place: Earth + Silence = The source.
- Year 1 SE: En-Ra enters the Tower. The first conscious contact with the Stream. “I do not ask. I hear.” At this moment the Stream-as-phenomenon closes into the Stream-as-channel: what had always sounded becomes answerable.
- Years 1–50 SE: En-Ra teaches the first twelve students. The Stream begins to spread.
- Years 50–200 SE: The first wave of connected humanity. Settlements merge into a common consciousness.
- ~Year 200 SE: En-Ra leaves his body and begins his Shimmer. His consciousness becomes the “source” of the Stream — the deepest and quietest voice, to which all later Architects can touch.
- Years 200–1,000 SE: En-Ra’s students carry the Stream further. The first cities of consciousness take shape. Civilization learns to live in common resonance.
2nd Hour — Ki-El
Materialization through collective will Formula: Desire × Many = Reality.
- Years 1,000–1,100 SE: Ki-El discovers the principle of collective materialization. He understands what En-Ra had missed: a single desire is a dream; a thousand people wanting the same thing is reality.
- Years 1,100–1,400 SE: Construction of the first “not-hand-made” cities of crystallized dream. The end of hunger in the conscious world.
- Years 1,400–2,000 SE: The flowering of collective creation. Humanity rebuilds its world through shared imagination.
3rd Hour — Sira-Nam
The path to the stars Formula: Consciousness + Stream = Path.
- Years 2,000–2,100 SE: Sira-Nam opens Psi-Navigation. Consciousness joined to the Stream can be at any point at once.
- Years 2,100–2,500 SE: First expeditions to other stars. Colonization of the nearest planets. In the process of navigation she created the first primitive maps of the Stream — without them navigation would have been impossible — but the full system of archiving and the Great Codex belong to the Sixth Architect.
- Years 2,500–3,000 SE: Humanity spreads across its own star system.
4th Hour — Tal-Mor
Unity through distance Formula: Distance ≠ Separation.
- Years 3,000–3,100 SE: Tal-Mor proves the continuity of the Stream across interstellar distances. He goes to a distant star alone — and stays connected.
- Years 3,100–3,500 SE: Mass colonization. The opening of dozens of planets.
- Years 3,500–4,000 SE: Consolidation on the distant worlds. The Stream unifies the whole colonized galaxy.
- ~3,900s SE: Tal-Mor records the prophecy: “When the Stream falls silent, walk by the stones.” The stones themselves do not yet exist. They will appear in Lira’s Hour — but the voice that spoke the prophecy was heard and remembered by the Stream.
- ~Year 4,000 SE: Tal-Mor leaves his body and passes into Shimmer.
5th Hour
The era of synthesis Formula: Dream + Stream = Matter.
- Years 4,000–5,000 SE: The Fifth Architect (name not preserved) opens Psi-Synthesis. The Stream can create not only buildings, but new forms of life, materials, plants.
- The “Golden Age” of creation. Experiments with reality itself. The world blooms as it has never bloomed before.
6th Hour
The era of archiving Formula: Knowledge + Structure = Wisdom.
- Years 5,000–6,000 SE: The Sixth Architect (name not preserved) creates the Cartography of the Stream. The Great Codex appears — the first complete map of the Stream as a whole. Knowledge becomes accessible, but the Stream becomes too “ordered.” The spontaneity of discovery is lost. The next Hour will have to remember how to be silent again.
7th Hour — Or-Kim
The era of teachers Formula: Knowledge + Emptiness = Room for the new.
- Years 6,000–7,000 SE: Or-Kim introduces the principle of transmission of the gift. For the first time, an Architect begins to prepare a successor while still alive. He understands: the Stream does not belong to a single voice, and to make room for the next, one must learn to fall silent in time. Secondary gift: Or-Kim also laid the first safe threads between worlds and is considered one of the founders of interstellar navigation — but his primary contribution is precisely the transmission.
- ~Year 6,800 SE: The birth of Lira in a world that still hears the Stream.
- ~Year 6,850 SE: Or-Kim begins the training of Lira. She learns not from a building, but from a voice without a body — and this determines her future gift: she will build presence in stone, not spells.
- ~6,990s SE: Or-Kim passes to Lira the last lesson — the skill of falling silent in time.
- Year 7,000 SE: The change of Architects. Lira becomes the 8th Architect. Or-Kim leaves his body and begins his Shimmer. His voice becomes the quietest of all — the voice of a teacher who waits, until the student is ready to hear.
8th Hour — Lira
The era of waiting and the making of the Path Formula: Loneliness + Hope = Path.
- Years 7,000–7,200 SE: Lira accepts the Shimmer of a civilization that has reached an incredible flowering. Everything already opened? Everything already created? What next? Or-Kim’s world is a world in which the Stream is so habitual that it is almost unnoticed. Here, for the first time, sounds the theme that will run through all of Lira’s Book: the world that has forgotten how to need.
- Years 7,200–7,600 SE: Lira begins to feel that the Stream is dimming. The civilization is sated and calm — but no longer growing. The hunger that had been the fuel of every previous Architect is disappearing. Lira begins to understand: a world in which everything comes easily cannot give birth to one who knows how to reach.
- Years 7,600–7,800 SE: Lira begins to seek — how to call the next Architect, if no one can hear a direct call? She tries different methods, many of which do not work.
- Years 7,800–7,950 SE: The opening of path-artifacts. Lira understands: to be heard in a silent world, one must not call — one must leave a trace. Not a message, but a presence. She begins to create Spires in thousands of silent worlds.
- ~7,800 SE: The construction of the Temple of No Voice — Lira’s last great work. She builds not presence, but its exact opposite — a room of such honest silence that one cannot hide in it even from oneself. The Temple stands as long as her own Shimmer stands.
- Years 7,950–7,990 SE: The creation of the Garden of Stones. The Tomb of the First Ones. Hundreds of Spires. The Path, drawn centuries before anyone walked it.
- ~7,990–8,001 SE: A faint touch in one of the worlds — in a scorched desert on a distant planet. Lira feels a shadow, not yet a shadow, still only a lean in the silence. She stops spreading herself evenly and directs the greater part of her work into that one world.
The Crossroads — The Triple Scene
~Year 8,001 SE. At one and the same moment, in three different points of the Stream:
- Kai (10–11 years old) finds the Stone of Answer in the Silent Walls. His first dream — En-Ra, opening the Stream. For the first time in his life, a boy from a disconnected world hears a voice that is not of his people’s world.
- Lira (in her Shimmer, ~999th year) enters the memory of En-Ra’s first entry — and for the first time sees a “shadow” of someone watching. She recognizes: the one she has been waiting for, for almost a thousand years, has just touched the first stone of her path.
- En-Ra (in the depths of the Stream) feels the echo: someone is looking at him. For the first time in 8,000 years, someone hears the very moment that En-Ra lived at the dawn of the Stream.
Three consciousnesses, separated by millennia, in a single second are joined through the Stream. This is the Crossroads, the point at which the chain closes.
Kai’s Path (childhood and youth)
- ~8,001–8,004 SE (Kai 10–13 years): Kai hides his dreams and drawings. Conflict with the Circle of Sand. The elders forbid him to draw and to go to the ruins. Kai learns to be silent.
- ~8,004 SE (Kai 13–14 years): Kai goes to the Temple of No Voice. For the first time he hears many voices — not one, but thousands — and the girl in white, who says: “Go to the place where there are no voices. There you will hear yourself.” He also hears, for the first time, the voice of the old man: “You are not alone. You are the next.”
- ~8,005 SE (Kai 14–15 years): Kai goes to the Spire. First contact with the “hum” — the voices of many Architects, layered one on another.
- ~8,005 SE (Kai 14–15 years): Kai finds the Garden of Stones. He walks the circle of twelve figures, touching each. On the eighth — the girl in white — he feels warmth. This is a touch from Lira across a thousand years.
- ~8,005 SE (Kai 15 years): Kai descends into the Tomb of the First Ones. He learns the history of his people’s forgetting — why the Circle of Sand forbids listening, where the fear of silence came from. The Tomb collapses as he leaves. Kai carries out a new crystal from under the collapse.
- ~8,006 SE (Kai 16 years): Kai lies one night under the open sky. For the first time, he hears En-Ra’s voice not in a dream, but as a voice turned directly to him: “I was pain. You are memory. Go. I am in you.”
- ~8,007 SE (Kai 17 years): For the first time, Kai answers into the Stream. “I am here.” En-Ra smiles — for the first time in 8,000 years.
- ~8,008 SE (Kai 18 years): The Triple Scene from another side — Kai sees En-Ra’s first entry not from outside, but from within. Lira sees Kai. En-Ra feels them both.
- ~8,008–8,010 SE (Kai 18–20 years): Kai completes his path — he finds the last artifacts, learns to hear past the edge of the Hour. He hears the eight Architects before Lira — and beyond them, beyond the Sea of Mute Centuries, he hears for the first time all who ever prayed into a void no one could answer.
9th Hour — Kai
The new cycle Formula: Forgetting + Memory = New Cycle.
- ~8,008–8,010 SE: Lira’s Shimmer is fading. In her last months she feels how the boundary between “Lira” and “Stream” is thinning. Kai approaches the last point of the Path.
- ~8,010 SE: The Convergence. Kai reaches the edge of the Stream. He hears Lira’s last breath. He meets her in the Shimmer — no longer as a shadow, not as an echo, but as a whole. Lira tells him everything. Kai understands for the first time that the limit is not a wall, but a radius of hearing. They say goodbye. Lira becomes part of the Sea. Kai becomes the Ninth Architect. The Eighth Hour ends. The Ninth begins.
- Years 8,010–9,000 SE: Kai’s Hour. He opens psi-archeology — the ability to hear not only his own Hour, but all Hours. He learns to hear the Sea of Mute Centuries as part of himself. He begins to prepare the Tenth.
The Future (after the books)
- ~8,500–9,000 SE: Kai searches for and finds the Tenth Architect. As with Lira, he does not lead him by the hand — he leaves a trace, by which the one who comes after will one day walk on his own.
- Year 9,000 SE: The next Architect, the Tenth (name not yet known even to Kai). He enters his Shimmer in a world that Kai helped to bring back to the Stream.
- Year 10,000 SE: The Eleventh Architect. Kai helps him, the way En-Ra once helped Or-Kim through the whole depth of the Stream.
- Year 11,000 SE: The Twelfth Architect. Kai is already old; his Shimmer is coming to an end. But his voice, like En-Ra’s voice, like Lira’s voice, will remain in the Stream.
- Year 12,000 SE: The completion of the first galactic cycle. All who shimmered in the 1st Hour (including En-Ra) return. All who shimmered in the 2nd Hour (including Ki-El) — also. The voices of all Architects, all people, all consciousnesses that ever lived in this cycle sound again — together and at once. The Sea of Mute Centuries also answers — for the first time in 12,000 years.
- 12,000+ years SE: The beginning of the second cycle. Humanity — already a galactic civilization, remembering all its lives. The Stream sounds at full voice. Kai, as the first Architect able to hear the whole cycle, becomes the one who stitches together the first and the second ring.

4. THE GALACTIC CYCLE: A VIEW FROM THE FUTURE
When Kai opens psi-archeology, he will see the whole cycle as one:
- The Past: 1st Hour (En-Ra) → 8th Hour (Lira). Everything — from the first whisper to the fading.
- The Present: 9th Hour (Kai). He is the axis on which the cycle turns.
- The Future: 10th–12th Hours. He hears the voices of the Architects not yet born.
- Beyond the edge: The 13th Hour — the beginning of a new twelve-thousand-year cycle. Kai will be the first to hear how the 1st Hour returns.
This is his gift: to hear not for a thousand years, but for the whole cycle — from the beginning to the return.
4.1. The Law of Response and the Meaning of the Crossroads
At the centre of this cycle stands the Crossroads of 8,001 SE — the point at which, for the first time in 8,000 years, all three lines meet: En-Ra (in the depths of the Stream), Lira (in her Shimmer), Kai (in a world cut off from the Stream). This is no coincidence — it is the Law of Response in action: the Stream remembers everyone who has ever sounded within it, and whoever is tuned to the right frequency can be heard across any distance.
The Crossroads is not the end of the cycle. It is its knot. The cycle becomes audible as a whole precisely because at one point the past (En-Ra), the present (Kai), and the future (Lira, who has not yet dissolved) meet. Without the Crossroads, the cycle would remain a set of separate Hours. With the Crossroads, it becomes a single melody, which can only be heard whole.
